One element of a powerful story, be it a poem or a narrative, is its specificity, its grounding in time and place.

How is who we are built on where we are from? What tales travel through time to be integrated into the fabric of our writing? Whether it be tender or painful memories, bits of song, words in our cradle language, a cherished recipe ... how do these traditions and filaments of memory come through in our writing? Are we imprinted with the places our parents walked, places we may have visited in our lifetimes if not in their retelling? How can this legacy provide the backdrop against which our stories recapture lost time, faraway places, in essence come alive for ourselves and our audience?
