It is sometimes easy to write in response to nature or to an existing work of art. Many workshops and guides offer prompts for writing, and there is a body of literature to guide us. But how can we do the heavy work? How can writing serve to express what we experience through life's major moments and the joys and hardships of love, parenting, loss? How can we take those raw emotions and turn our deeply personal into something compellingly universal and resonant? In this workshop, we will look at examples of poems that achieve this, and individually explore how to turn this raw material into art.
